Happy Independence Day!

I hope you’re celebrating this special day in U.S. history with friends and family from other generations, sharing stories and experiences that will make your lives richer!

I’m sharing an article I read recently in AARP magazine, Friends for the Ages, The power of cross-generational, age-defying bonds .  The article helped me reflect on some of the things I’ve learned from my bonds with folks of other generations; compassion for others, embracing change, and stepping outside my comfort zone running toward new experiences (thanks millennials!).

Do you have a powerful bond with someone from another generation?  How has the relationship impacted your life?  Share your stories with us in the comments section of my blog.

  1. Karen, thanks for this blog. I have a circle of senior buddies. The average age is 88. We meet once a month for bible study and dinner to learn and giggle. One of my church buddies who is 89 once told me that we should make friends with younger folks so there will be somebody to visit you in the nursing home. When I watched my dad’s disappointment when his friends didn’t visit, it was because they were his age and afraid to drive outside their comfort zone. I use to bring a group of them once a quarter to visit. I think hanging with seniors is also a way to understand your parents as adults vs mom and dad. Lots of “ah-ha” moments!
I also have lots of millennial buddies and that’s another blog!

  2. Ina, thanks for reading and responding to my blog post. I couldn’t agree more with your comments! The stories you shared sparked thoughts of similar experiences. My mother-in-law, who passed away recently after a lengthy illness, made and nurtured friendships with younger people from her job, church, and neighborhood after she moved across the country to be closer to us many years ago. Outside of family, these were the people that were physically able to visit her in the nursing home. We are so grateful to them.

Also, I volunteer with a non-profit once a week where the volunteers are mostly 80+. I too, have had so many “ah-ha” moments while spending time with them, from advice regarding big life decisions to how to reduce my electric bill!
